New Hampshire

The Andy Warhol Diaries

New Hampshire is a recurring but lightly described location in the diary, associated chiefly with Jon Gould’s travel and telephone contact with Andy Warhol. It registers less as a portrait of place than as a point of separation in their everyday lives.

A Destination in the Diary

On August 6, 1982, Warhol noted that Jon was going to New Hampshire. The entry places the trip among the day’s other plans: John Reinhold was preparing to travel to Japan, while Warhol himself wandered around the neighborhood on his birthday. New Hampshire enters the account as a practical destination, not as a setting Warhol describes in detail.

A Place of Contact

A later holiday entry records that Warhol talked to Jon while Jon was in New Hampshire. The diary supplies no account of Jon’s activities there, but the brief note makes the state a location from which the two remained in contact across distance.

Narrative Significance

Across these references, New Hampshire is defined by its relation to travel and communication: Jon goes there, and Warhol speaks with him from there. The entries offer no broader description of the state or account of what the trip meant. Their brevity instead makes the place part of the diary’s record of separation and connection, where a location matters because someone is away and can still be reached.
